A date at Tampa International Airport

On Valentine’s Day, I was supposed to take Ellie on a date while Marti took Jack on a date. Ellie and I had agreed to go to the airport because she had shown such an interest in airports after reading her book Ellie’s First Plane Ride where a toy elephant takes her friend toy penguin on a trip to the airport and then on the plane, with photos of them riding the escalators, the monorail and getting their miniature luggage at baggage claim.

However, Valentine’s Day rolled around and I was feeling wretched, and ended up spending all day in bed. So we rescheduled for the following weekend, except Mama and Jack joined us. Continue reading “A date at Tampa International Airport”

A bike ride after work

There are a few months of the year when Florida is quite delightful, starting in about November and lasting until February. Outside of that is just hot and nasty. So when this time of year rolls around, we do our best to make the most of it.

The other night I came home and was greeted at the garage door by Ellie who said:

Daddy, I suggested that when you came home, that we all go on a bike ride together and Jack can come too.

Fun on the farm

Yesterday, we all went to Fox Squirrel Corn Maze to have some traditional autumnal fun.

Not only was it Ellie’s first hayride, but it was mine too. We had fun playing in the cornbox, admiring butterflies, eating grilled corn and picking out pumpkins. Jack even had a good old time. Continue reading “Fun on the farm”

Saturday morning at Starbucks

A couple of weeks ago, Ellie woke up early (around 7) and I decided that since Jack was still asleep, I’d let him and Mama get some rest, so we got dressed and took a little trip to Starbucks.

To say that it was a dream morning is putting it mildly. Ellie was so well-behaved. She sat with me and read books through and through while eating bananas and drinking tea. She wowed everyone with her abilities and then proceeded to play with me on the couch without being raucous. What a hoot! Continue reading “Saturday morning at Starbucks”

Tuh-MAY-to, Tuh-MAH-to [VIDEO]

There are a few words which Ellie can’t decide how to pronounce. She hears me say WAR-tuh, whereas she’ll hear Martina say WOD-ah; she hears Martina say YOAH-gert and then hears me call it YOH-gert. Sometimes she’ll pick her pronunciation depending on who she’s speaking to.

In this video, she goes over the various options for talking about a small red fruit.

Throwing Ellie into the air [VIDEO]

This past Sunday was the first day that we dared to venture in the pool this year and while it was pretty chilly, it was certainly a lot of fun. Ellie got right back into the swing of having fun in the water. I wasn’t expecting however that when I counted “1, 2, 3” before throwing her into the air that she’d start counting in German instead! She’s now fairly competent at counting to 10 in both English and German as part of our efforts to ensure that she’s bilingual. Continue reading “Throwing Ellie into the air [VIDEO]”
